I've managed a $180,000 annual infrastructure budget for a 140-person logistics company. I've negotiated with 30+ vendors over six years, and I keep a TCO spreadsheet that borders on obsessive. So when I say this, I do not mean it lightly: for small and mid-sized IT sites, a Tripp Lite UPS is usually the best money you can spend.
I know 'best money' sounds strange coming from a cost controller. But I learned the hard way that buying a UPS on price per VA is one of the most expensive decisions a small team can make.

If you own a solar rechargeable battery charger, a universal power tool battery charger, or a UPS, the first step is the same. How to check a car battery with a multimeter is the exact skill you need. Set the multimeter to DC 20V, touch the red probe to the positive terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal, and read the resting voltage. A 12V lead-acid battery should read around 12.6V when fully charged, 12.4V at about 75% state of charge, and below 12.2V if it needs attention. These numbers follow Battery Council International guidance.
This method works for the 12V battery inside a small Tripp Lite UPS as well, though newer models have self-test functions. If you have a solar rechargeable battery charger, the same test tells you whether the panel is actually charging or a wiring issue is draining the battery. A universal power tool battery charger can handle multiple chemistries, but you still need a multimeter to verify voltage before you trust it with expensive tools.

You might be thinking, 'Sure, but you're a moderate-size company. What about my four-camera office or my home lab?' That is exactly the situation where I recommend a Tripp Lite 1000VA UPS.
I'm not saying every budget UPS is garbage. Some are fine for a desk fan or a noncritical router. But the consequence of a wrong power decision in a small office is not proportional to the size of the office. A one-hour outage can cost more than a small business bills in a week.
So when I hear a buyer say 'I don't need much, just something cheap,' my answer is: buy the tool that will actually perform when the grid doesn't. For me, that's a Tripp Lite UPS. The vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously years ago are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders today. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential. That's why I refuse to buy power protection for small sites on price alone.
