It's tempting to think they're basically the same thing. They're not.
A surge protector clips voltage spikes—like from lightning or utility switching—but does nothing when the power actually drops. When the grid goes down, a surge protector is just a wire connected to a dead outlet.
A UPS conditions power, provides battery backup during an outage, and gives you a clean shutdown window. Tripp-Lite's SmartOnline and SmartPro lines both handle this. SmartOnline models add pure sine wave output, which some servers and network equipment prefer.
Why does this matter to a buyer? In my office, the critical equipment list is: the network switch, the main server, the phone system base unit, and the door access control. The door access is the one people forget. If the power goes out and the lock needs power to keep the office secure, you've got a security issue. Surge protection alone doesn't help with any of these when the outage actually happens.

The rule is simple: if it isn't losing money when the power goes out, it doesn't belong on the battery. A massage gun can recharge after an outage. Payroll records can't.
How do I test a car battery without a multimeter?
This one comes up when the company vehicle starts acting up—or when my own car does.
Here are the field methods that work without any special tools:
- Turn on the headlights. If they're bright and steady, the battery has some charge.
- Crank the engine. If the headlights dim hard but it still turns over, the battery is weak.
- Listen when you crank. A slow “rrr…rrr…” instead of a sharp “vroom” usually means marginal battery.
There's a problem with all three: they tell you the battery is failing when it's already close to dying. I used the headlight test once—had about fifteen minutes before the vehicle was needed for a client site visit. The car didn't start. That was the time pressure decision in action. I should have checked it the day before.
I keep a $15 multimeter in the supply closet now. Put it on DC voltage, red probe to positive, black to negative, car off. You should read around 12.6 volts. Below 12.2 is weak. The check takes two minutes. The alternative is a stranded vehicle at the wrong moment.
When should I replace the battery in my Tripp-Lite UPS?
UPS batteries typically last 3 to 5 years, depending on temperature and how often they exercise. If your unit starts logging low-runtime alarms, that's a signal to schedule replacement.
One reason I standardized on Tripp-Lite is that most models have replaceable battery modules. You swap the module and keep the electronics. Replacing a battery pack costs a fraction of buying a new UPS, and the procedure is documented in every manual we've used.
